SVGFF Provides Relief to Affiliates Impacted by Hurricane Beryl

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting its football community by providing $15,000 (XCD) in relief assistance to affiliates severely impacted by Hurricane Beryl’s passage in July 2024.

Recognizing the urgent need for help, the SVGFF executive acted swiftly to assist those affected, adopting a needs-based approach to distribute the funds. This initiative saw three individuals—Otnell Douglas, Lionel Cumberbatch, and Foster Branch—receive $3,500 (XCD) each to assist with roof repairs. At the same time, other affiliates were presented with critical items to aid their recovery efforts.

The funds were presented during a small ceremony on December 24, 2024, at the SVGFF’s administrative office. President of the SVGFF, Otashie Spring, commended the dedication and contributions of the recipients to football and underscored the Federation’s responsibility to support its affiliates in times of need.

“We as a Football body are always ready to help in times of need, and this presentation is another manifestation. Our mandate is to grow the sport and touch the lives of those who have been selfless to Football, and Messrs. Douglas, Cumberbatch, and Branch fit perfectly in this respect.”

This $15,000 donation not only provided immediate relief but also highlighted the Federation’s commitment to its affiliates, ensuring that those who contribute to the growth and development of football in St. Vincent and the Grenadines are cared for during difficult times.

The SVGFF continues to prioritize the well-being of its football community, recognizing that the strength of the sport is rooted in the resilience and dedication of its members. The St. Vincent and the Grenadines U-20 women’s national team is gearing up to make waves in the prestigious Jewel’s of the Caribbean U-20 Women’s Tournament. Held in Trinidad and Tobago, this highly anticipated event brings together some of the brightest young football talents from across the region. The Vincentian squad is ready to showcase their skills and determination as they take on fierce competition, including Jamaica, Dominica, and two teams from the host nation, Trinidad and Tobago: the White Angels and Red Angels.

On Wednesday, December 4th, fans witnessed one of the most anticipated matches of the season as defending champions Jebelle FC faced last season’s runners-up, North Leeward Predators. Jebelle emerged victorious with a 2-1 win in a dramatic encounter.

Steven Pierre became the hero of the night, converting a late penalty to seal the win. North Leeward Predators faced challenges throughout, including Gavin Browne’s red card in the first half and Javier Chance’s red card in the second, which led to the decisive penalty. Leigertwood opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a well-timed finish, sending the Avenues fans into rapturous celebrations. The team continued to dominate possession, and their relentless pressure paid off when Erel Hector doubled the lead in the 30th minute with a clinical strike.

Just when Awesome FC looked to regroup, Leigertwood struck again in the same minute, converting a precise pass to seal the match at 3-0. His commanding presence and clinical finishing left Awesome’s defense struggling to contain him.

The result leaves St. Vincent and the Grenadines in a strong second place on the points table with 10 points, just two behind leaders El Salvador.

The match began with both teams feeling each other out, but Vincy Heat gradually took control of the game. The breakthrough came in the 42nd minute when Steven Pierre found the back of the net. Pierre finished off a brilliant attacking play, slotting home after receiving a perfectly timed assist from Shak Adams. The goal gave Vincy Heat a deserved lead heading into halftime.

The second half saw Vincy Heat looking to extend their advantage while Montserrat pushed for an equalizer. The drama unfolded in the 86th minute when Oryan Velox was fouled inside the penalty area following a dazzling run. On November 11, 2024, the squad set off from St. Vincent, prepared for the crucial challenges ahead. Our boys will face Montserrat on November 14 at 4 p.m., followed by a match against Bonaire on November 17, also at 4 p.m. The results of these games will be vital for their standing in the competition, and they are ready to leave it all on the field.

In addition to the core squad, the team has welcomed back several key players as well as a new player, who bring valuable experience and skill to this critical stage. Micah Joseph, currently playing for Simcoe County Rovers FC, newly joins us, lending his sharp midfield presence. Sebastian Alexander, who represented us in the Concacaf Boys Under-20 competition 2024, also returns to strengthen the midfield. On defense, Jazzi Barnum-Bobb re-enters the lineup, bringing his defensive prowess, while Malcolm Stewart and Mekeal Williams return to bolster both the forward and defensive lines. SVGFF and SVG Community College Collaborate on D-License Program to Strengthen Sports Science Education

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF), in collaboration with the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC), is advancing sports science education through an engaging D-License program, the entry level in the SVGFF coaching pathway. This ongoing partnership is designed to equip SVGCC students with both theoretical knowledge and practical coaching experience, preparing them for promising careers in coaching and sports science.

The D-License program spans two semesters, each with a unique focus aimed at building a comprehensive skill set for future coaches. During the first semester, SVGFF’s technical staff conduct classroom sessions twice weekly, introducing students to essential coaching principles. These sessions cover a wide array of topics, including game tactics, player management, team dynamics, and coaching ethics. This foundational semester provides students with the strategic and leadership skills needed to understand and approach coaching in a structured, professional manner.

In the second semester, students transition into a practicum phase, where they have the opportunity to apply their learning in a hands-on environment. Under the supervision of SVGFF coach educators, students conduct practical sessions at local primary schools twice a week, leading young players through organized training activities. This practical component allows students to gain real-world coaching experience, applying their knowledge to guide young athletes and refine their own coaching styles. Feedback from experienced coaches helps students bridge the gap between classroom learning and field experience, giving them the confidence and competence to pursue coaching roles in the future.

The collaboration between SVGFF and SVGCC reflects a mutual commitment to fostering sports education and youth development within the community. By involving primary school children in structured, supervised sports sessions, the program not only enhances the students’ coaching abilities but also instills in younger generations an early appreciation for the discipline and joy of sports.
